• Two metal plates close to each other with an insulator (the dielectric) between them will store an electric charge.  This ability is known as capacitance
  • The unit of capacitance is the Farad (F) but as this is a very large unit the micro-, nano- and pico-Farad (μF, nF, pF) are used
  • Capacitance depends on
  1. the area (A) of the plates,
  2. the distance between them (d), and
  3. the dielectric constant (K) of the material between them
