Capacitors

Temperature coefficient

  • Ideally component values should not vary with temperature.  Resistors and capacitors can be manufactured whose value changes with temperature
  • They have a negative [value decreases with temperature] or positive temperature coefficient (PTC / NTC), specified in parts-per-million per degree Centigrade (ppm/°C)
  • Such resistors are called thermistors and are used as temperature sensors and current limiters
  • Capacitors are used to compensate for drift due to temperature variation in tuned circuits
